ESL architecture · decision page

Access point or BLE? Start with TagHub BLE.

Tocvue offers two separate ESL architectures. For most small stores, phone shops, boutiques, and pilots, the default is TagHub BLE — phone or tablet local updates without an access point for the basic workflow. Keep the HonorLink / 2.4 GHz AP path as a secondary option when a large chain truly needs centralized control.

Conclusion: Start with TagHub BLE + TagHub App (coming soon). Bring in Cedar V3 / 2.4 GHz SLIM only when the buyer clearly needs multi-store centralized AP updates.

Two paths — keep them separate

Use the checklist below to choose. Battery years, IP ratings, and interference claims are confirmed per model in writing — not invented on this page.

Default · recommended

TagHub BLE (phone workflow)

Bluetooth ESL labels managed with a compatible phone or tablet app for the basic local workflow. No access point is required for that basic workflow.

  • Best fit: small shops, 3C / phone stores, boutiques, pilots
  • Staff must be near the label to trigger a refresh
  • Pair with TagHub App (coming soon) for Tocvue’s BLE story
  • Do not promise unattended full-store auto-pricing on BLE alone

Secondary · large chains

2.4 GHz SLIM + Cedar V3 AP

Centralized wireless updates through a compatible Cedar V3 access point (AP / gateway) for SLIM-series labels. Ordinary Wi-Fi APs are not a substitute for the ESL access point.

  • Best fit: larger chains that need centralized / multi-store control
  • Requires AP coverage planning and project confirmation
  • POS / ERP sync is a project requirement — confirm, do not assume
  • Keep messaging separate from TagHub BLE

Side-by-side (buyer checklist)

High-level comparison only — confirm exact model, app, quantity and integration in writing.

QuestionTagHub BLE (default)2.4 GHz AP (secondary)
Who updates the label?Phone / tablet near the labelCompatible Cedar V3 access point
AP required for basic local use?NoYes
Typical starting scenarioSmall store / pilot / boutiqueLarge chain / centralized control
Unattended full-store auto changeNot the BLE default storyProject-dependent with AP + platform
Mix with the other label family?Do not mix SDR and BLE messaging; confirm SKUs with Tocvue / IT before quoting mixed floors
Battery years / IP65 on this page? Not stated — confirm per model; do not invent
Important: BLE refresh needs the phone in Bluetooth range and a staff trigger in the app. SDR / 2.4 GHz labels cannot be refreshed by phone Bluetooth. TagHub is Tocvue’s BLE app name for this path.

How to decide in one minute

  1. Default: choose TagHub BLE + TagHub App.
  2. Only if you are a large chain that needs centralized AP control → look at 2.4 GHz SLIM + Cedar V3.
  3. Confirm in writing battery life, solar options, local protocols, and IP ratings for the exact SKU.
  4. Do not mix AP and BLE into one interchangeable system.

Not sure which ESL path fits?

Share store count, label quantity, and whether staff can walk the floor with a phone. Tocvue will recommend TagHub BLE or the AP architecture — not both mixed into one pitch.
